The Electricity at Work Regulations require in Regulation 4(2) that:-
As may be necessary to prevent danger, all systems shall be maintained so as to prevent, so far as is reasonably, such danger.
This refers to all companies employing five or more persons.
In English this means that a system of maintenance is required to ensure the safety of every electrical appliance.
Insurance companies are insisting that appliances be tested as part of the conditions of providing cover.
PAT testing, and the records that are created as a result, is considered to be a suitable system in the eyes of the Health & Safety Executive, Insurance companies and the Law.
